The Last Samurai
I just got back from the movies. I saw The Last Samurai with Alex and her friend Jackie. We got there, saw everything for The Last Samurai was sold out until 11:20, then got those tickets and ate / hung out at Moe's for a while. The Last Samurai has got to of been one of the best movies I have seen this year. This is also without a doubt the best Tom Cruise movie I have ever seen, better than Mission Impossible, heck, it's even better than Top Gun. The action scenes were excellent. They were not like Kill Bill; some of he action scenes had more of an elegant nature to them. The kendo drills had a certain grace to them. Other action scenes had more of a Braveheart meets Gettysburg type of feel. Thought the movie, my mind and heart were split between what would happen. I really wanted the samurai to defeat the Japanese militia against all odds. However, my mind knew that would never happen and that it would be a slaughter (And no, that was not a spoiler) and that the samurai did not have a change against rapid fire weapons. The Japanese actors were excellent in both acting ability and their handling of swords. Tom Cruise was good, but slightly under Ken Watanabe (Katsumoto). However, Cruise and Watanabe underplay their roles, letting their characters' deeds speak for them and permitting intimacies not usually associated with epic moviemaking. Cruise's transformation into a samurai is convincing as the actor makes us understand that this the only way he can reclaim his soul (now that was a spoiler). This is the type of movie I would buy on DVD.
